I’m Fred Stephenson and I’m a Canadian “Halhighlander” presently living in the “Haliburton Highlands” Tourism Area of South Central Ontario, Canada.
Although I was born in the City of Peterborough, Ontario, Canada, my childhood years were spent in the village of Omemee, Ontario, Canada where my father George C. Stephenson owned and operated the feed mill at one end of the village, the grain elevator at the other end of the village, and, in later years, the grain elevator in Fraserville, Ontario, Canada. Different generations of our Stephenson family had owned and operated the feed mill on Mary Street, beside the Pigeon River dam, for almost a century from 1872 to 1969. The Pigeon River dam was also owned and operated by my father up until 1967, when he sold it to the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources. Click Here For A Picture Of The Old Mill. The last generation to operate that feed mill included my father George, and his brothers, Charlie and Tim. I was the last Stephenson descendant to operate it while I was a high school student, in the summer of 1969. For four years while I was young my father was Reeve, (Mayor), of the village of Omemee and I remember that he was continuously involved in all aspects of life in the village, which of course led to controversial situations, often discussed in the Peterborough Examiner, The Lindsay Post, The Toronto Star, and The Globe and Mail newspapers. The feed mill business involved a lot of manual labour for very little reward so I’m sure that village matters were a welcome relief for my father, both while he was just on the village council and when he was the Reeve of Omemee.
In the fall of 1969 my father rented out the Mary Street feed mill building and business to a Fraserville, Ontario businessman, and the feed mill building burned to the ground on February 19, 1971 while the building and business were being operated by that person. My Dad and I still owned the property and we built a 2 bedroom house on the property which my Dad sold in 1976.
I attended high school at Thomas A. Stewart Secondary School in Peterborough as our family had moved to Peterborough in February 1965. I graduated high school with Grade 13 Honours in June 1971. Eventually all of my Stephenson relatives re-located to Peterborough and my cousin Michael C. Stephenson presently runs a Professional Genealogy Research business there. Please have a look at his web site to see historical pictures of the Stephenson Homestead and the Stephenson Mill, as they looked many years ago.
I then attended Carleton University in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada from 1971 to 1974. One of my most significant accomplishments at Carleton was working on and training a student run security team called the “Turnkeys” from September 1971 to February 1974. I became so well known that the President of the Carleton University Students’ Association Inc. asked me to establish a student run bus service, as I was also a school bus driver from 1973 to 1974. I set up and ran the service with myself as the Manager-Driver of a 19 passenger Mercedes-Benz shuttle bus. I organized a Public Vehicle License hearing before the Ontario Highway Transport Board in September 1974 and that experience eventually led to my career in the transportation business.
From 1975 to 1987 I was employed with various bus and truck transportation companies in a variety of cities including Peterborough, Ontario; Kingston, Ontario; Ottawa, Ontario; Vancouver, B.C.; Toronto, Ontario; Windsor, Ontario; and Haliburton, Ontario.
In 1987 I settled in the Haliburton Highlands and have lived here since that time. Amongst other endeavors over the years I established a career as a taxi driver in the Haliburton Highlands, driving only for Hyland Taxi when it was owned by Basil Boice, (now deceased), up until November 2003, and then by Martin S. Grant, (a.k.a. Marty Grant), since November 2003. I always worked the afternoon/late evening shift, but since I’m basically a morning person I made a decision to leave Hyland Taxi in April of 2012. I had been employed at Hyland Taxi from May 5, 2000 to April 14, 2012. Since that time I’ve been much more busy with all of my web sites and my online business.
From 1997 to 1999 I completed a computer studies program at Sir Sandford Fleming College and eventually applied the skills I learned to establishing a business online, and creating a variety of web sites and blogs that I am constantly updating. Click Here To View My Resume On Line.
